Strategy - A National Cancer Plan for Wales
We know from experience in other countries that national cancer strategies with political commitments to improving services can have significant success. In Wales progress has been made with the publishing of Designed to Tackle Cancer, however we feel that a fresh approach is needed to reflect the changing nature of cancer policy and treatment.
To continue to improve cancer incidence and survival to make Wales's outcomes among the best in the world, we need a comprehensive cancer plan to incentivise action, and to ensure that cancer policies and services are implemented and integrated effectively across Wales.
We want the next Government to develop a new comprehensive cancer strategy for Wales including:
- More integrated planning so that all services can be joined up, and the separate strands can be brought together in a more cohesive way
- A system-wide approach covering research, prevention, screening, diagnosis, treatment and palliative care
- A joined up approach involving all stakeholders, including the voluntary sector and the research community
- Collecting and sharing information on how cancer treatments and outcomes vary across the country so planners can more easily work out how to change services and improve the quality of care
- Setting out how and when the strategy will be monitored and evaluated
